Brazillion Obesity

Today in class team two presented google/youtube videos ("Killing Us Softly 3"; Dove Evolution"; and "Dove Onaslaught") and the srticle ("Brazillion Obesity: The Big Girl from Ipanema" and "Health and Fitness: Snip, Suction, Stretch and Truss").

Brazil is a beach nation, one where people like nothing better than to spend weekends and holidays with a cold one on the sand. But the chances of spotting suntanned beauties in tiny bikinis are getting smaller and smaller, according to a government study released this week. Research shows that the number of Brazilians suffering from obesity is growing. And the trend toward the fuller figure is most prevalent among women. "Obesity among women had stabilized in previous studies, and now there is an expressive increase," says Deborah Malta, the study's coordinator. "That is very worrying."

Some 13% of Brazilian adults are obese — 12.4% of men and 13.6% of women — according to the study, which was carried out last year among 54,000 people for Brazil's Health Ministry. Meanwhile, almost half (47.3%) of adult males and 39.5% of females are considered overweight. Those figures are still low compared with industrialized nations like the U.S., where more than a third of all adults are considered obese (a condition defined by the ratio of weight to height). But Malta says the trend is clear and that Brazil is slowly on the same path. In 1975, similar studies showed that only 2.8% of men and 7.8% of women were obese; just seven years ago, the numbers were 8.8% and 12.7%.

Pandora Radio!!!!

When was the last time you fell in love with a new artist or song?
At Pandora, we have a single mission: To play only music you'll love.
Since we started back in 2000, we have been hard at work on the Music Genome Project. It's the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Together our team of fifty musician-analysts has been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound - melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics ... and more - close to 400 attributes! We continue this work every day to keep up with the incredible flow of great new music coming from studios, stadiums and garages around the country.
With Pandora you can explore this vast trove of music to your heart's content. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and let the Genome Project go. It will quickly scan its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings - new and old, well known and completely obscure - to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.
You can create up to 100 unique "stations." And you can even refine them. If it's not quite right you can tell it so and it will get better for you.
I saw a comic strip recently, in which the joke ran along the following lines:

Man A is at a computer, gazing riveted at the screen.
Man B approaches, asks “What are you doing?”Man A: “I’m blogging.”Man B: “What’s a blog?”
Man A: “Oh, it’s an online diary. I use it to record whatever I do all day.”
Man B: “And what do you do all day?”
Man A: “I read other people’s blogs.”

Today in class we went to the computer lab and where told that we would be looking at our fellow classmates blogs and not onllyreading it but commenting on there blogs as well. When I realized what I was. going to be doing I was a little nervous mainly because I was scarded my blogs would not make sence to who was reading it. When I write my blogs i sometimes ust write them to meet the legth of what Ms. Crawford sets out and others about how i really felt of what we did in class or mty feelings to a cerain topic. So then as i was reading fellow classmates blogs and commenting on them i realized that they must be feeling the same way I am about there own blogs because I have to amdmit that some did not makes sence or nd just where not at all interesting

What is youtbe's place in history?

YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal. Prior to PayPal, Hurley studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Chen and Karim studied computer science together at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Before being purchased by Google, YouTube declared that its business model was advertisement-based, making 15 million dollars per month. Some industry commentators have speculated that YouTube's running costs — specifically the bandwidth required — may be as high as 5 to 6 million USD per month, thereby fueling criticisms that the company, like many Internet startups, did not have a viably implemented business model. Advertisements were launched on the site beginning in March 2006. In April, YouTube started using Google.

Youtube, CBS, NBC, ABC are going to have an awful lot in common in the not too distant future
Which company uses its traffic to drive eyeballs to programming on which it sells advertising ? They all do.
The biggest difference between Youtube and the broadcast networks is that one actually produces content or pays a licensing fee for the content before they sell advertising around it. Youtube doesn’t.
I dont think there is any question that the Youtube model is better. Now that they have stopped hiding behind the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, Youtube has taken the very smart step of letting content “audition” for the right to sign a license for Youtube to send it traffic and sell advertising around it.
Anyone can post content on Youtube. If that content generates enough interest (even if its interest that is artificially created by the content production company), Youtube will offer it a license that allows Youtube to sell advertising around the content and share that revenue with the content creator (Without a license,Youtube is not allowed to sell advertising around the content. By the DMCA, they are not allowed to even know it exists. Youtube acts only as a host). It really is win win.
Which leads to the question of whether or not broadcast networks like CBS, NBC, ABC should try to copy the Youtube model ? Should they create an “audition” environment and let the winners get slots of broadcast TV ? The answer of course is no. As networks have already found out, what works on the internet has yet to work on broadcast TV.
I think the real approach is for the broadcast networks to “Game” Youtube. There is nothing that says that they cant use Youtube to audition their pilots. By putting pilots on Youtube and Hulu as well, its a chance to see what the level of interest is for the pilots. This “crowdsourcing” approach, when combined with some traditional research and analysis could allow broadcast networks to be smarter in chosing which pilots to put on TV.
Not only would it allow broadcast and cable networks as well to be smarter, but it also would allow them to get paid to promote the show. Its in Youtube’s financial interest to promote the pilots heavily. Its the most professionaly produced content available to it to promote. So why wouldn’t they ? More promotion means that pilots would actually generate revenue in addition to awareness prior to a network scheduling decision being made.
From a bigger picture perspective, unless youtube can reach a position where it generates more advertising revenue online than a slot on a broadcast network schedule, this approach would cement Youtube’s position as the “minor leagues” for broadcast network content. Pilots would be auditioned online and then possibly get “called up” to the major leagues, also known as the network schedule. Those pilots that didnt warrant a call up can get polished up for a 2nd audition, or the production company could choose to stay on Youtube and produce future episodes, working with in the revenue levels earned online.
Its also interesting to project where this could lead. If Youtube generates significant enough revenue for professional content producers to consider it a viable platform to invest in, then it faces the prospects of having to decide which content to generate traffic to. Content producers will recognize the revenue available and that will act as a magnet for more content created at greater expense. Those who have made significant investment will expect that Youtube will send traffic its way. Of course even on Youtube, not all content will get equal traffic. At some point decisions will have to be made as to which content gets the most traffic pushed its way. Put another way, Youtube will have to “schedule” its traffic. It may be done algorithmically, but its a schedule . Just like ABC, NBC, CBS try to schedule their shows to optimize “traffic”.viewers, so will Youtube.

Cyberlove! (Internet dating)

Ever wonder who uses Internet dating services like Match.com and eHarmony.com? The answer may surprise you. I think, “Well, gee, everybody uses them!” But that’s not the case. There’s a particular psychological profile that researchers have discovered of users of Internet dating services.
The researchers (Kim et al., 2009) surveyed 3,345 people in the U.S., of which 1,588 (47.5 %) were men and 1,757 (52.5 %) were women. Ages ranged from 19 to 89 with a mean of 48 years old. They gathered their data using a number of standardized questionnaires and psychological measures.

The researchers found that people who are more “sociable are more likely to use Internet dating services than are those who are less sociable. This finding challenges the stereotypical profiling ofInternet daters as being just lonely and socially anxious people.”

While that may have not been the case 10 years ago, times have changed and using the Internet as a means of finding a prospective partner is no longer thought of as unusual. The researchers finding in this regard is not unique previous research has come to the same conclusion, so it’s considered a robust research finding. For people who are already sociable, using the Internet as a dating method is just one more tool that they can use.

Similarities between diferences.

I think the difrences similarities between difrences can be really hard to figure out but sometimes can be the mos notorious things that you can see when your reading a formal and an informal letter lets take a blog post that iw rote a while for exepmle the one i named "fake e-mail for a true friend" ,i wrote that letter as part of a project for my english class,as you can see the letter is writen in an infrmal way, a think that the structure for both , would be actually the same one.

A formal letter is a letter written to a business, a college, or any professional that are not considered friends or family.
Name Address Phone number Email.

Example of layout:
Dear (Name),

(Body of letter)

Sincerely, (Name) (Sign in pen under typed name)

An informal letter is a letter you would write to a friend of family member. It doesn't necessarily need a format, but there is a standard.

Example of layout:

Dear (Name),

Body of letter

Sincerely, (Name)

Rough Draft.

It's 8:10 a.m and im presenting my rough draft of a formal e-mail to my group ¨THE ALL STARS¨ and to be honest comparing my e-mail with theirs mine seems to be a little short (ok way short!) so i hope i can get as much help possible as i can out of my team members.

5:30 p.m , well jus as i expected , the activity during was class was really helpfull and the recomendations that i got from my team partners will really help me to write a better paper .sometimes is hard to tell if you are doing things the right way, but having someone telling you or helping you in certain way can really make the dirference wen you get the final product.

But even though you do something and finish it and you think theres nothing else you can add to this thing, at least wen youre writtin a paper think of this (this is what my english teacher told us during class) "a paper can always be improved and hearing other views and comments are always a good thing."

Articles and More Articles.

Many of us have a tendency of never read news papers perhaps because we just can't find 5 minutes in our daily life to sit down and read a couple of articles, work and school are probably the mos frequent things that stop us to inform ourselves about whats going on around the world.

Sometimes wen you read an article you really have to pay atention to the message they are trying to get across to you , Could be something like a long text about a certain political point of view or a critic about last week preview of a movie, Luckly for us (college students) some of them could be advertising a new program that benefit college students and some that seem to be selling a product.

One article in particular would be the new technology that Purdue University is starting this two thousand nine fall semester. This program is called "signals" and is for the main purpose to increase college students grades and over all way they approach a class.

And this is how it works:

As soons as the student log into their accounts they will se a window showing hoe thwy're doing in their classes The basic colors, red, yellow and green are significant in there own way. The red is the worst. Meaning that the student is failing and could possibly lose credit for that class. The yellow is reserved for students that are not doing there best but also just getting by. This does not mean that the student is absolutly safe from failing but should take a little more effort before the light hits red. Which in turn would mean that they have hit the failing mark. The last and final color green. Reserved for students that are not only turning in the homework on time and scoring high on test in the classroom, but also with extra help. This along the lines of scheduled tutoring, login's when they check there updates for there classes and what they'll be doing in that class.

The E-MAIL REFLEXION.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation were you just dont know how to write in a formal way?,if your answer is 'yes i have!' let me tell you something that i learned today that might help you with this.! if your plans for the future include ,working in an oficce or for a big company you'll must know how to write in a formal way , and since today most of the things are doing trough the computer I'll be focusing on the correct way of writting an e-mail.

CC?,ASAP?,ENC?PS?......yes!, i know what you're thinking, what do all these words mean?...well let me give you a brief explanation just to clarify all your doubts.

asap = as soon as possible
cc = carbon copy (when you send a copy of a letter to more than one person, you use this abbreviation to let them know)
enc. = enclosure (when you include other papers with your letter)
pp = per procurationem (A Latin phrase meaning that you are signing the letter on somebody else's behalf; if they are not there to sign it themselves, etc)
ps = postscript (when you want to add something after you've finished and signed it)
pto (informal) = please turn over (to make sure that the other person knows the letter continues on the other side of the page)
RSVP = please reply

Now that you know what do these words mean, lets get to the next point, wich is, how important is to write in a formal way?

Many people think formal writing is superior because it makes you sound educated. You must know what you're talking about, because you always write "it is" instead of "it's."You never offend anyone because you are neutral and always write in the passive voice. You never use slang or abbreviations. When you use formal written English, you usually come off sounding unnatural and, well, stuffy. Formal writing has its place, but unfortunately many people use it for the wrong reasons.

The real problem with highly formal writing, at least when you're writing for the masses, is that it encourages self-indulgence. Formal writing is less about connecting with people and more about posturing.

The big question.

Today during class,my team the "ALL STARS" presented to the class a series of articles talking about school and the incorporation of technology, now, when you hear the word technology you might think of something like a videogame console, a desktop or laptop computer or perhaps something more common like a cellphone or a tv, is known by fact that technology changed the world for the better of all human kind making easier and more intresting the way we live.

But the big question is ,wether schools should incorporate this new age mathods into the classroom?. one of the bad things is that is also known that teenagers can't write in a formal way using the internet and this can bring a new bunch problems that teachers would be forced to face this problems , wasting lots of studyindg time during the school year.

One of the things that we talked about was "CLIVE THOMPSON ON THE NEW LITERACY"
Andrea lunsford sai: this isnt true."I think we're in the middle of a literacy revolution the likes of wich we havent't seen since greek civilization"she says. For lunsford , technology isn't killing our ability to write it's reviving it and pushing our literacy in bold new directions.

The first thing she found is that young people today write far more than any generation before them. That's because so much socializing takes place online, and it almost always involves text.

The fact that students today almost always write for an audience gives them a different sense of what contitues good writing.Of course, good teaching is always going to be crucial ,as is the mastering of formal academic texts. But it's also becoming clear that online media are pushing literacy into cool directions.

We think of writting as either good or bad. What today's ypung people know is that knowing who you're writing for and why you're writing might be the most crucial factor of all.

Who said This is easy stuff?

God!, who said college was gonna be easy?, today i got my english schedule for this semester, and let me say, its going to be a long, long, long semeter wich im not afraid of, i really think im ready enough to take this course and get an "A", now, im not saying is going to be easy, maybe i'll just have to make some sacrifices and work a littlebit harder, the teacher asked us during calss ,where do you think you are at this point?, well... to be honest im not quite sure, but i hope that Mrs.Crawford sees the enthusiasm that i come to school with, and i want to prove my parents, friends and most important myself, that i can do this.

I´ve heard over the years that people say -Two minds think better than one- well i hope this will work for my team the "ALL STARS", so far we seem to be working as we should, we just got a new member in our team that will incorporate to us for the next assignment wich is due next class......well amigos wish me luck, and i will see you around.

My Writing Process

Can your hear that jazz?...well thats because im about to write something on internet and yeah...i love music but i love it even more wen im writing, beacuse it helps me to clear my mind and inspirate to write.

I worry about the wording, I worry about the themes, the plot as a whole, whether the characters seem to others the way they seem to me, whether the book is getting too long, whether my protagonist is likable, whether my fantasy world is consistent, whether I'll be able to hold everything together, whether there's even anything worth holding. There is never a moment when I don't have something to worry me. I have learned that this is just what it feels like to write a book. Most of the time, I can keep it from bothering me.

I write almost every day, including when I'm on vacation. Sometimes for 2 hours, sometimes for 12 hours; most often something rational and in-between. I don't have a daily quota. I write however much I write, and my plan is always changeable. I don't force myself to write if it's not working. I try not to check email or do other distracting things, but I don't succeed very often, and that's okay, because small rests and distractions are part of the process.

HOW DO I USE TECHNOLOGY IN MY LIFE.

Hey guys!!!, my name is Luis and im a college student, and you might ask yourselves how does a student as good and awesome like me could posibly use technology in his daily life , well let me tell you my friends that this a very important aspect in pretty much anyone hows planning to attend college, everything in these days is done trhough the computer in diferent ways such as accounts or simply chat rooms and is also an amazing wayto investigate different things for any of your school classes, and not everything that we do is school matters because let be honest, how many of us use web pages like ,myspace or facebook or even blogger.com? , so technology is also a way to comunicate with each other or just chillout and be social.
